A complete wilderness does not include stone walls, unless those stone walls themselves are considered part of the wilderness -- that is, made by creatures they considered wilderness savages. Excellent little tidbit there. Not quite the smoking gun, but certainly another piece to the giant puzzle.
What's great about this passage is that he is getting rid of the Ancient stone work. Un-building the past.
